tissues

the wind came,
and with it all hopes of hunkering
were swept up by the snowdrifts, those
crazy crazy snowdrifts,
standing in the middle knowing not where to hide
from the assault of the weather
from the rage of the storm.

Inside, it's no better, mountains of kleenex
echo those mountains of snowdrifts
my face is cracking slowly
my throat is raw.

waiting on the world to change

Watching the AMA's last night, I wondered who choreographed the damn thing? It was rampant with poor transitions, odd pairings, and bad back-to-back performance choices. You don't put (the new) Nelly Furtado before Josh Groban (who I really just don't get, anyways, who the hell is that guy?). And Miss Furtado and Gwen Stefani had the exact same hair, in different shades (uh excuse me? Stylists? You're fired). But the biggest irony of all? John Mayer, the smartest and most honest man in commercial music, singing "waiting on the world to change", right before Snoop Dogg and Akon's perfomance with tons of scantily clad women rolling around on the ground covered in piles of cash, flashing their crotches, complete with a stripper pole. Waiting on the world to change indeed.

I don't know about you...

but I am getting really fed up with this shit. I admit that I don't know a lot about history, and I am partial to the Arab world after spending a couple of years there, but I just don't understand why "we" think that we know the "right" way to live, and we are so much more entitled to our opinions than anyone else. Simplified? Yes, but it really bothers me. Look here, and here.

johnny fucking appleseed

I came home the other day and all of a sudden noticed a) small sticks lying on the snow and b) big old tire tracks in my parking spot. I looked around confusedly for a moment, couldn't figure it out. Walked to the door, and looked back, and realized that while I was at work, someone (I'm assuming it was the City) came and cut down a small tree in front of my house. I had no notice, no idea that this was happening, and I still don't understand why they would remove that single one and leave the one 20 feet to the north standing. Especially since I use that tree every winter to wrap my extension cord around for plugging in my vehicle. What the hell? What am I supposed to do now? Can I call them and demand they erect a pole for this purpose? How can they get away with this travesty?

california apples

This photo will make 2 the total number of times I've posted pictures about apples in the last little while. Don't ask me why. Ok, ask me why. I think it's because of that damn book, still, the one that's apparently not very good but I loved it anyways. There's a line in that book that says "comfort me with apples for I am sick of love", and it comes out of nowhere, and it's not followed by anything that explains it in any detail, and I couldn't get it out my mind for a long while.

My mom came back from California last night at midnight. I sent her a pseudo-telegram on thursday saying "Mom! Stay in California! 20cm of snow! -30C!" but she showed up all tanned anyways, had been on the road since 6:30am and ended up having to take 5 aeroplanes to get back from Palm Springs, where she was at a conference 1/2 of the time and visiting a dear friend the other 1/2 of the time. Told me stories on the drive home about going to a spiritual retreat centre and soaking naked in the natural hot springs overlooking the ocean. I just grimaced and said that yes, the walk had been shovelled for her. Jerk.

things I love

I love living alone on a corner lot with a 20 cm snowfall.

I love shovelling 150 feet of sidewalk after a long day at work.

I love it when the shovel hits a raised bit of sidewalk, completely jarring my entire body.

I love the irrational rage that therefore overcomes me.

I love the lack of sandbags in my truck bed.

I love the silence of coming home sometimes.

I love eating junk food and watching the Biggest Loser.

I love watching all the girls at the office leave, and return, from maternity leave.

I love ass-kissers.

I want to love this song, but I'll be damned if I can find the whole thing anywhere. Even for money.

* update ~ I got it. I would say something about finding what you need if you look for it long enough, but I'm not so sure that I believe that. *

what a way to go

Apperantly someone is holed up in one of the Budget storage facilities across the street with a gun. There's been cops and a SWAT team running around all morning. Bit strange, to be just working as normal with cop lights flashing right out the window 20 feet away.

why is that one doll smiling?

Last night we watched "Bubble", the first movie ever to be simultaneously released in theatre, DVD, and VOD. It was weird.

look up

How is it that I've never heard of Damien Rice before? No wonder this is the most important relationship of my life.
